Do you want work with us? We are always seeking motivated people among students and researchers for working on cutting edge research projects. If you are interested in our research topics, or if you have your own research statement, on bioinformatics related topics, and you want to complement and exchange your knowledge with us, you can join our group in the following ways:
[Master thesis] [PhD application] [Postdoc application] [Visiting]I you are an undergraduate student you can ask for a master thesis in bioinformatics. If your main background is related to life science a basic knowledge on statistics and computer programming is required. Depending on the university program basic statistics and introduction to programming are usually acquired during the first or second year of a master course in life science programs. Otherwise, if you are not aware with computational and statistical thinking, but you are strongly motivated to acquire them, we can fill that gap with an internship where you can follow on-line courses on computer programming and statistics and practice with those topics in our lab. If your background is related to math, computer science, or statistics, then you need a basic knowledge in biology. This is not a limitation because usually you may need to know just the topics related to your thesis project.
A thesis work usually consists to approach a well known biological problem that usually has already been addressed with computational approaches. The first step is to known the state of art and try to reproduce existing approaches, for example, on new datasets. Then, if you demonstrate enough skills to tackle and master the problem from a computationally point of view, you may be able to propose an advancement in the field. This last option is not mandatory for the conclusion of the thesis but could be worth for your curriculum if it leads to a publication.
Please contact me by email or by coming at my office for an appointment if you are interested in a master thesis project in bioinformatics.
To work with us as PhD candidate you may consider the opportunity to apply to the one of the following PhD programs where I and my collaborators are faculty mentors:
The PhD program have a duration of 3 years. In the first year you'll approach an area of research and grab from the literature whatever is known. During the second year you should have the maturity to make some advances in the field, and in the third year you'll generally consolidate, disseminate, and prepare the thesis and the defense. You will be strongly encouraged to: i) follow higly specialized courses and seminars, ii) present your results to conferences and workshops, iii) write reports and papers, and iv) support teaching activities.
Calls for applications are closed now. They are usually opened at the beginning of July of each year. I'll annunce them also here, so, stay tuned if you are interested to apply.
Research is your passion? Do you have a PhD in bioinformatics or in computer science, statistics, math? Your aim is a work experience in a very dynamic group where bioinformaticians, computer scientists, statisticians, and biologists interact on cutting edge research projects? Are you interested in our research topics and do you want to contribute with novel ideas? Please send me by email a résumé specifying your education, skills, and research experiences, to fix an appointment for an interview for a postdoc position in our lab.
We are able to host visiting students, researchers, and professors that are interested to spend a period of time at our University to work on a research project and/or give seminars or courses to our students. Depending on available funds our department can provide support for accomodation and transportation. Please contact me by email specifying your visiting intends if you are interested.
